1 - Before we start

Objective 
Students orient themselves with the book before starting reading.

Resources needed
  • Workbook pages 2-4
  • Crossroads by Larissa Behrendt

Teacher facilitated discussion
Looking at the cover of the book, answer these questions - 
  1. What is the title?
  2. Who is the author?
  3. What do you think it might be about?
Activities
  • Commence guided reading and create a summary after each chapter.
2 - Making good choices 

Objective
Students explore choices made by different characters at different points in the novel


Resources
  • Workbook pages 5-6
  • The Family module presentation of the Yarning Strong series (explore racism and its impact)

3 - How does the legal system work?
Objective
Students briefly explore the legal system with a focus on the criminal system.

  • Worksheet pages 7 - 8
  • Magistrates Court Role Play

  • Do a K-W-L on the whiteboard on the legal system.

Activities
4 - Indigenous people and the legal system 
Objective
Students explore some of the key events in Australian legal history in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, in particular The Australian Constitution, The Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody

5 - Culmination Activity
  
Students have viewed a number of presentations during the unit. for their assessment item, students can incorporate ICT (Information & Communication Technology) skills to create a presentation about making good choices, that includes:
  • an audio file
  • original and researched images
  • text
